For most of us, the word adventure conjures images of exotic destinations, mountain peaks, or dark jungles, but now a group of explorers are finding adventure much closer to home. Urban Exploring, Urbex, Urban Spelunking -- they’re all names for the same thing, exploring abandoned urban settings such as theaters, factories, amusement parks, churches, old schools, etc.

Urban Exploring is about rediscovering the beauty of forgotten things at abandoned sites in cities and towns. It’s an exciting way to learn more about the history, architecture, and culture of a place. These explorers are not vandals or thieves. They don’t come to pillage. The rule they follow is to respect the site, with their motto being: take only pictures, leave only footprints.

If you are considering some urban spelunking of your own, here are some simple guidelines to follow:

Plan It Out
Before embarking on your urban adventure, do your research. Identify potential locations, learn their history, and understand any legal restrictions. Start online where many explorers document their experiences and provide valuable insights into the accessibility and safety of the site. Make your first trip a familiar location. It’s important to get comfortable with the basics of Urbex before venturing into more dangerous and unknown locations. Leave the mines, sewers, or storm drains for when you have more experience, these locations require specific equipment and can present more dangers.

Safety First
Safety should always be a top priority. Wear appropriate clothing. Sturdy shoes and heavy clothing to protect yourself from potential hazards like broken glass or rusty nails. Bring a first aid kit, a flashlight, a fully charged phone, plus snacks and water to stay energized and hydrated throughout the day. Tell someone where you’re going and what time you expect to return. And trust your instincts, if something doesn’t feel safe, leave.

Don’t Go Alone
Exploring with a buddy or in a group not only adds to the overall experience but enhances your safety as well. A group offers support in case of an emergency, and sharing the adventure afterwards over a few beers is one of the best parts of any experience.

Respect the Environment
Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints. It may be abandoned but it deserves respect. Urban exploring is about appreciation, not destruction. Leave everything as you found it, and carry out any trash you take in. Avoid vandalism, graffiti, or any activities that harm the site. The idea is to experience the history of the location, not to contribute to its deterioration.

Play By the Rules
Forbidden spaces can be enticing, but you need to know the legal implications. Trespassing on private property is against the law and can result in serious consequences. Always obtain permission when possible and adhere to any posted warnings or restrictions.

Take Time and Enjoy
Don’t be in a hurry. Take time to soak it all in. The details in the architecture and the things left behind tell a story if you’re willing to listen. And remember that part about taking nothing but photographs. Bring a camera or smartphone to document your urban exploring journey. Slow down, and take the time you need to find the right photo.
