This Earth Day, We're Thinking About Our Footprint

For a company like ours, born out of a love for exploring the great outdoors, Earth Day is a big deal. It’s a time to take stock of how we operate our business and the effect we have on our planet.

That effect is one reason why our goal has always been to make durable footwear that lasts from season to season. Simply put, a better boot is a more sustainable boot. The longer a boot lasts, the less you need to buy and the fewer end up in landfills. We also use Environmentally Preferred Materials (EPMs) wherever possible across our product line. This includes sourcing leathers exclusively from tanneries with a Gold rating from the Leather Working Group, utilizing recycled materials, and incorporating bio-based foams into our footbeds and midsoles.

We understand that no matter how well we make our products, we still have an impact on the environment. That's why we’re committed to achieving certified carbon neutrality. Working with Carbon Neutral for our certification each year, we rigorously evaluate every aspect of our business (scope 1, 2, and 3) to determine what the impact is, and what we can do to reduce and offset it. We're proud to have maintained net-zero emissions since 2019.

Last year, our calculated emissions were 2670 tC02e. We offset those emissions by purchasing $45,738 in carbon credits provided by two US environmental projects. The first is King County Parks, a public forestry project in Seattle, WA. They use carbon financing to purchase and protect land that's at risk of being cleared for residential development or commercial timber harvest. The second is the Crow Lake Wind Farm Project, a zero-emissions, electricity generation source located in South Dakota. The project consists of 108 GE 1.5-megawatt turbines with a generating capacity of 162 megawatts (MW).
